Neil R. Mucci of GBC Leads caHUB Committee in Developing, Summarizing and Publishing Recommendations that Promote Availability of Biospecimens for Research
SEATTLE, April 25, 2013 Global BioClinical (GBC) is pleased to announce the publication of an article in the April 2013 issue of Biopreservation and Biobanking titled: Meeting Research Needs with Postmortem Biospecimen Donation: Summary of Recommendations for Postmortem Recovery of Normal Human Biospecimens for Research. The published article can be found at: http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfplus/10.1089/bio.2012.0063.
The authors were members of the Cancer Human Biobank (caHUB) Acquisition of Normal Tissue Committee. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research Branch (BBRB), formerly Office of Biorepositories and Biospecimen Research (OBBR), convened the committee to advise on strategies for developing and implementing normal research tissue acquisition. Further Information on caHUB can be found at http://cahub.cancer.gov. Further Information the BBRB can be found at http://biospecimens.cancer.gov.
The article summarizes the committee’s recommendations and addresses key ethical, scientific, and operational aspects for collecting normal reference biospecimens from postmortem donors for genomics research. Awareness of these recommendations can foster more effective collaboration, mitigate potential challenges, promote postmortem donation options for families and increase the availability of high quality biospecimens for research.
The committee recommendations have successfully been put into practice for the collection of biospecimens for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) Program which is a pilot study of human gene expression and regulation in multiple human tissues. The GTEx program will provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of gene regulation and disease-related perturbations. Further information on the GTEx program can be found at http://commonfund.nih.gov/GTEx.
